Vintage Computing: Mac OS 9.2.2 on Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh

TAM with MacOS 9.2

Getting Mac OS 9.2.2 (the last version) onto the Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh is not as straightforward as it could be. Part of the reason is that Apple did not support 9.2.2 on the TAM and other 'Old World' Macintoshes. This is a brief outline of the steps that seem to work for getting Mac OS 9 installed and doing the upgrade path to 9.1, 9.2.1 and finally 9.2.2 onto a TAM with good drivers for Video:

0 - Remove any Accelerator Cards from the system
1 - Install 9.0.4 from CD
. Boot 9.0.4 Disc
. Initialize Drive
. Install w/ All Options EXCEPT Netscape!
. Reboot
. Run through Mac OS Setup Assistant
. Setup 'Internet' as per network needs
2 - Disable Virtual Memory and Memory Check in OS9
. Hold command+option when opening control in menu
3 - Install 9.1 upgrade via Mac OS 9.1 Update.smi
4 - Unstuff OS9 Helper, run it
. (may want to create stuffit expander alias on the desktop)
5 - Install 9.2.1 via OS9 Helper
6 - Power down
7 - Install 9.2.2 via OS9 Helper
8 - March 2002 ATI Driver
9 - Reboot
10 - Unstuff Crescendo/Enc Ins 3.1 Driver, Install Sonnet Crescendo
Accelerator driver
11 - Install iTunes 2.0!
12 - Disable iPod Firewire Extension (if desired)

This is how my 20th Anniversary Mac is setup and is quite stable.

All of the above files are available through Apple's website (as of this post) with exception of the Original OS9 boot disc, the OS9 Helper app and the Crescendo Driver. Good hunting!
